OUR MISSION

Friends Foundation of the Ridgewood Public Library supports the library by raising private donations and managing an endowment that directly funds programs, services, facilities, and emerging needs identified by the library. It works alongside the library to ensure it has the resources to thrive as a community hub for now and generations to come.

We are a group of volunteers who share a love for our award-winning Ridgewood Public Library and a deep commitment to its success.

February is Reading Marathon month! The Reading Marathon is a wonderful fundraiser that helps to foster a love of reading at school and home, while also raising valuable funds for the Friends Foundation of the Ridgewood Public Library to purchase books and media, as well as science, art and cultural programs for all ages.

All Ridgewood children in PreK-Gr. 12 are welcome to participate and no registration is required. Simply have your child set a personal reading goal & track their reading all month long. Then, submit their reading online at the end of February to be eligible for prizes, such as a free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's, gift cards or a Ben & Jerry's 20-Scoop Vermonster Sundae. If you don't receive a flyer through your school, you can download one from the Reading Marathon website at the link in our bio.

That's also where you'll find a list of fun events taking place at the Ridgewood Public Library throughout the month, beginning with two kickoff events for every age - Miss Jolie on Jan. 31 & K-Pop Demon Hunters on Feb. 2 (event registration required).

Friends Foundation is proud to sponsor this Friday's Reel Voices program. In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Ridgewood Public Library will be screening the first episode of Eyes on the Prize lll: “We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest.” A propulsive narrative chronicling the fight for racial justice in America, this episode spans the rise of Reaganomics and the AIDS crisis, communities in the South Bronx and the Philadelphia fight for housing and healthcare. The film will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Leslie Wilson, Montclair State University professor and expert in environmental racism and African American studies. Thank you to everyone that attended the Jean Hanff Korelitz Author Reception at Ridgewood Public Library. The night was a great success! Attendees enjoyed charcuterie, cookies and wine, followed by an illuminating conversation with the author, led by library assistant director, Roberta Panjwani. Jean discussed her three newest novels - 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘭𝘰𝘵, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘭 and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘳. She also spoke about her side venture, BOOKTHEWRITER, where she connects award-winning authors to book groups. Friends is proud to support the Ridgewood Public Library's original podcast, A Bend in the Road. Recently, one of our very own volunteers, Sue Rodin, was interviewed by Library Assistant Director Roberta Panjwani.

In 1993, when Sue saw gender inequality in her workplace, she didn’t just get frustrated—she took action. Tapping into her network, she founded Women in Sports and Events (WISE), an organization built to support and elevate professional women in the sports industry. More than 30 years later, WISE is still going strong, with 25 chapters across the U.S. and Canada and over 6,000 members. Rodin has been called an “Eternal Optimist”—and in this podcast, you’ll see why.

⚾ It's baseball season and we have some exciting news for all of you baseball enthusiasts! Thanks to your donations to the Friends, we have added a museum pass to the Jackie Robinson Museum (@jrfoundation). Located in the heart of lower Manhattan, the Jackie Robinson Museum is New York City's first museum dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement. This is explored through the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in the modern era of Major League Baseball, and an important civil rights activist. April 29, 6:00-8:30pm - “Ladies Tailor,” a 1990 film that tells the story of the last 24 hours of the lives of a Jewish tailor and his family in Kyiv prior to the Nazi massacre of Jews at Babi Yar in 1941. Benjamin Rifkin, Ph.D., provost and professor of Russian history, literature and film at Fairleigh Dickinson University, will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion.

May 4, 2-4:00pm - “Climbing Into Life,” a documentary detailing the inspiring life story of Dierdre Wolownick, the mother of “Free Solo”’s Alex Honnold. From unhappy wife and lonely mother, Dierdre confronts fear and ageism to end up on the wall of El Capitan at the age of 71. Followed by Q&A with Director Melissa Davey.
